Maheshwari handloom sarees are a symbol of exquisite craftsmanship and rich cultural heritage from the town of Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, India. The history of these sarees dates back to the 18th century when Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar dynasty commissioned weavers to create distinctive textiles for her court. The result was the creation of Maheshwari sarees, which have since become renowned for their unique blend of tradition and elegance.
These sarees are traditionally woven using a combination of silk and cotton, which gives them a lightweight yet lustrous quality. The weaves are known for their distinctive patterns, including stripes, checks, and floral motifs, often inspired by the architectural designs of the region’s forts and temples. One of the unique features of Maheshwari sarees is their reversible border, known as “Bugdi,” which allows them to be worn on both sides.
